About IELTS - At a Glance

The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is a popular test that assesses the English proficiency of candidates aspiring to study or work in the countries where English is the main language of communication. It helps authorities to measure how well you can read, write, speak and listen in English to find out whether you are suitable to begin your studies and settle in the country.

IELTS is recognised by over 10,000 educational and professional institutions globally. It is like your entry point in your journey of studying abroad.

Who Needs to Take the IELTS Exam?

Individuals who are planning to study or work in an English-speaking country, particularly in nations like the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA, often need to take the IELTS exam.

Many universities and colleges require IELTS scores as part of the admissions process for international students, while immigration authorities may require it for visa application purposes.

IELTS Training Modules

The IELTS exam consists of four modules:

  1. Listening: This module assesses your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts and accents.
  2. Reading: Here, you are tested on your reading and comprehension skills through a variety of texts such as newspapers and academic articles.
  3. Writing: This module evaluates your writing skills in English. The objective is to understand how good you are in expressing your thoughts through a written medium.
  4. Speaking: In this round, you will engage in a face-to-face interview with an examiner who will check whether you can communicate verbally in English.

Types of IELTS Exams

There are three types of IELTS exams:

  1. IELTS Academic: This version is for individuals who want to apply for higher education programs or professional registration in English-speaking countries.
  2. IELTS General Training: This version is suitable for individuals who are traveling to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience, or training programs.
  3. IELTS Life skills: This is Secure Language English Test (SELT) approved by the Government of UK for individuals who need family visa, spouse visa, etc.
